Your home isn’t just a place for you and your family to pass your time. It’s also an investment. Or at least, it should be. Managed correctly, your home can be what allows you to live well in your retirement years, leave a good inheritance to your children, or simply achieve financial independence.
The value of your property will likely increase naturally — it’s rare that a property depreciates — but it’s recommended to make an effort to increase it manually, too. There are a host of home improvements that can add value, while at the same time making your home a more enjoyable place to be.

Improve the Heating System
Prospective home buyers want, more than anything, to know that they’ll at least be comfortable in their homes. Older homes might have charm, but if they can’t manage the UK winter, then you won’t find too many people willing to move in. Upgrading your heating system to one that’s more energy efficient and has a higher heating capacity will lead to an increase in your home’s value. Improving the energy efficiency of your home will help, too.
Consider a Kitchen Remodel
All rooms on your property are important, but some are more important than others. Any potential home buyer will take a long, hard look at the kitchen — and if they like what they see, then they’ll be much more likely to pay extra to make the property theirs. One study found that renovating the kitchen can add as much as 6% to the value of the property. There are beautiful German kitchens that are affordable, allowing you to create a great cooking space without breaking the bank. As well as the actual kitchen itself, take a look at the lighting; having inviting, cosy lighting really can make all the difference.
Add a Garden Office/Summer House
There are more people than ever working from home, but many of them don’t really like to work from home. They want to work from a space just outside their house, such as in a garden office. This provides what is, in effect, an extra room which can then be utilised as a garden office or anything else. Garden offices can cost a few thousand, but when you consider that it’s essentially another room that you’re adding to your home, the costs seem very reasonable.
Increase Natural Light
People are happy to pay more to live in a home that provides natural light. After all, who doesn’t love the thought of having breakfast on a spring day in a kitchen that’s bathed in sunlight? You can’t make the sun shine in the UK, but you can ensure that any sun rays can pass into your home by working to increase your home’s capacity for receiving natural light. Adding bifold doors can be a game-changer for natural light. You might also consider taking the minimalist route since light finds it easier to make its way into a home when there’s no bulky furniture or other items standing in the way.
