How to Make the Most of Small Apartment Living

by Clare Leave a Comment

living room decor

It’s important to understand that you don’t need a large house to live comfortably. In fact, small homes, whether they be cute little cottages, studios, or apartments, can be pretty nice, too! Honestly, nowadays, modern living spaces are getting smaller and smaller, especially if you’re opting to live in an urban area. But there’s no harm in that at all.

For example, theres is a book and YouTube series called “Never Too Small,” and this shows off how you can still live lavishly, have a beautiful home, and the square metres can still be small. But of course, when it comes to smaller spaces, there are going to be some challenges.

For example, you’re limited in what furniture and decor you can have. You have to be cautious with what you pick for the space, and so on. But you can still make the most of small apartment living and live pretty comfortably, too. So here’s how!

You’ll Need to Embrace Minimalism

So this goes with what was said above: you have to pick and choose what you can have. When space is limited, adopting a minimalist mindset can be incredibly liberating. Think of larger homes; there’s that need, that pressure to fill in those empty spaces, or else the room just won’t look right.

You’ll need to prioritize essential items and declutter regularly to avoid unnecessary clutter. What most people would do would be to just use multifunctional furniture (like a Murphy Bed), a fold-down dining table, and so on. IKEA sells plenty of these; the same goes for Amazon and sometimes even thrift stores, too. But in general, you are saving some money in the long run.

Elevating Comfort with Window Seats

Installing a window seat is a fantastic way to maximize the utility and charm of your small living space. These cozy nooks not only provide extra seating but also enhance the overall aesthetic of your apartment. By fitting a window seat into your living room or bedroom, you create a personal sanctuary where you can relax with a book, enjoy the view, or have a quiet moment to yourself. To further personalize this space, add bespoke cushions for window seats. These cushions can be tailored to match your decor, offering both comfort and style and ensuring that even the smallest spaces are both functional and inviting.

Getting Creative Can Be Fun

Honestly, it’s incredible how innovative people can be when they’re limited in space; basically, creativity just seems to run wild. For example, when doing basic chores like laundry, there are now even counter-top washer machines; there’s Balcondry, which is a clothes hanger that you can stick to your wall (especially helpful if you lack a balcony), and some even use their bathtub (if they have one) and wash laundry there.

But it’s not even just chores where people get creative; the storage solutions (just type that into Google and see for yourself) being sold nowadays are getting pretty impressive as well.

Get in That Natural Light

Alright, so this tip might be a little too overdone, but if it works, it works! In general, you need to keep in mind that natural light can make even the smallest of spaces feel bright, airy, and inviting. That’s why a lot of smaller homes will have mirrors and translucent furniture; they help light spread and make the space bigger. So you’ll need to try to avoid obstructing any light (plus, everyone needs that Vitamin D, too).

Create Some Zones

Larger homes don’t need this because there’s basically a room for everything. But with most apartments, especially small ones, having fewer walls (which helps create an open feeling), creating some zones will help. Use area rugs, furniture arrangements, or room dividers to create separate areas for sleeping, working, dining, and lounging.
