We’d been watching with anticipation to see what was to become of Zuhus on South Bridge. Zuhus opened at the end of last year and now that they have had time to settle in we thought we’d go along for a visit and try out what was on offer. We discovered that they were a Portuguese restaurant and we quickly started reminiscing about our last holiday to Portugal and how good the peri peri chicken was. We had mixed expectations of what to expect and how good the food would be. Zuhus which we later found out is run by the same people who own Kebabish in Dalry. Once we knew this, we were pretty sure we’d be in safe hands.
We arrived around 6pm after work and found that the place was pretty quiet. Although this very quickly changed with a number of groups arriving, the place filled up very quickly! It seems that Zuhus has built a following of regulars as those in the know knew to order a spiciness less and then top it up. Their menu is largely based on peri peri chicken served in a variety of ways. You can have it in anything from a wrap to burger and lots in between. The recipes have been handed down through the generations and all their spices are carefully selected and blended to create the right amount of heat with the perfect balance of flavour. They know that there are people like Mr Edinburger and myself who can never agree on an acceptable level of spiciness so they have developed the spice-o-metre. Simply choose your level of heat to suit your tastebuds when you order!
I knew it would probably be pretty hot so I opted for a mellow mild peri peri chicken pitta and sweet potato fries with Mr E opting for the dare devil (I think he really was feeling like a dare devil) 10 chicken wings with sides of garlic bread and potato wedges. There was some confusion on Mr Edinburgers part when he ordered and I ended up with a marvellous medium rather than my mild. So it was a tad hotter than I’d expected!
Thank goodness for the bottomless drinks is all I can say! We were very surprised by the spicy punch our dinner packed! We had totally under-estimated just how spicy it would be. Both dishes were excellent! Although I think we may opt for a a lower of spiciness next time and top it up! The chicken was fresh, the flavours fantastic and the wedges and fries both crispy and fluffy at the same time. There were so many flavours and with the heat of the spice Mr Edinburger was possibly struggling a little more than he would admit but he did however finish all 10 wings. This was impressive given how hot the medium was I can only imagine how hot the dare devil actually was.
The staff are very friendly and we loved being able to top up our own drinks. The atmosphere is laid back and they are very family friendly. We are looking forward to going back and hope Zuhus sticks around for the foreseeable future!
