Campaigners from Usdaw – the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers – will take part in this weekend’s West Lothian Pride celebrations, highlighting both how far LGBT+ rights have come and the work still needed to achieve full equality. The Pride march, taking place this Saturday 26 July, will begin at 12 noon from the Scottish Institute of Theatre, Dance, Film & Television in Livingston and end at the Howden Park Centre.
Usdaw’s regional secretary for Scotland, Tony Doonan, praised the “extraordinary advances” made over the past two decades but stressed that “serious problems remain” and that Pride remains an essential platform for challenging discrimination and promoting inclusion. “As trade unionists, we can be proud of the part we played in those achievements,” he said. “But the struggle for equality has not yet been won.”
Usdaw, which represents around 360,000 members across retail, distribution, and other industries, supports LGBT+ members through inclusive policies, workplace advocacy, and dedicated reps trained to tackle discrimination. The union’s presence at West Lothian Pride underlines its commitment to solidarity and equality, as campaigners continue to champion safe, supportive environments for all.
