Weddings are a joyous occasion, but for those who are not so fashion-savvy, choosing what to wear may cause some anxiety. The different fabrics, styles, and combinations can turn getting ready for a wedding into a stressful mess that makes them lose interest in the party.
Having a dress code should help by limiting your options, but instead, it only makes it tougher to find the perfect outfit. Somehow, we’re always missing the piece that would be perfect for the occasion.

We’ve prepared a guide to save you going through your closet and trying on everything you have. We’ll cover the most popular dress codes of today and mention stylish ideas that fit them perfectly. So, if you have a wedding approaching, keep reading.
White Tie Events
Let’s start with the most formal possibility out there. Most people don’t throw white-tie weddings anymore, but if you do get an invitation to this type of celebration, you’ll have to focus on your outfit.
Men can’t really go wrong if they follow simple instructions. Firstly, you’ll need a white shirt and a white bow tie. A black tailcoat and a white waistcoat paired with opera shoes will complete the ensemble, and you’ll be good to go. If you really want to lean into the white-tie angle, you can add white gloves.
Women, of course, should go with a long dress. It’s the safest option for formal events. But make sure you’re able to enjoy yourself, too. Wear heels that won’t hurt your feet and a dress that isn’t difficult to sit in.
Black Tie Events
Black tie takes the formality down a notch from white-tie events. In these parties, men can centre their outfit around a dark tuxedo. In most cases, a white dress shirt is the second step, and the rest needs to be coordinated. Choose a bow tie that suits your tuxedo, add a cummerbund or suspenders, and you’ll be ready to go. Of course, you can’t go wrong with a pair of dress shoes, like Oxfords.
Women still have the option of the long gown but a cocktail dress also makes sense and could be the right option. Heels are recommended, regardless of your dress choice. But still, try to remain as comfortable as possible. For the perfect finishing touch, consider accessorizing with designer sunglasses that elevate your overall look while protecting your eyes.
Semiformal (Cocktail)
We’re working our way to more casual combinations and events. If you’re invited for a semiformal event, you get to play a bit more with your outfit but still don’t have the complete freedom of casual wear.
For cocktail attire, most men wear suits without a tie. But a casual tie and a darker suit would fit in as well. Of course, you don’t have to worry about cufflinks and similar high-end additions.
Women have even more flexibility with this dresscode. Wearing a knee-length dress is even acceptable. Feel free to experiment a little bit, but don’t go overboard since it’s still a semiformal event.
Casual
Although it sounds like you can wear anything with a casual dresscode, keep in mind that you are still going to a wedding. And casual has different meanings for all of us. For example, for males, a casual outfit may include a sports jacket and button-down, or even a polo, shorts, and a pair of men’s sunglasses. So, find the sweet spot and pick an outfit that makes you comfortable and would fit in with the rest of the invitees.
Women who are going to a casual event don’t need to worry about finding the perfect gown. A sundress will do just fine, paired with casual high-heeled shoes or even something flat.
Traditional
Some people celebrate their weddings dressed in traditional outfits. In most cases, these people will provide you with the information you need before the wedding. But if you need more details, do the research yourself and dress appropriately for the event.
It’s important that you don’t try to alter traditional outfits and respect the heritage of the people you’re celebrating.
Regardless of the type of wedding you’re going to, now you’re ready to be the best-dressed person invited. Make sure to follow our advice, and you’ll have no problem impressing the rest of the guests.
