Between choosing guests, booking venues, organising entertainment and selecting outfits, it’s easy to get overwhelmed when planning your wedding. Make sure you don’t overlook these key details if you want a wedding day you and your guests will never forget.
The right rings
Begin with the rings. You’ll be wearing these every day as a symbol of your everlasting love for one another, so you must take care to choose the perfect pair of wedding rings that you’ll cherish forever.
Go for couples’ rings united in design or select unique pieces suited to your individual tastes. Yellow gold is the traditional metal of choice, but hardwearing shiny platinum is proving popular this century. When selecting your wedding band, it’s best to match the metal of your engagement ring in terms of hardness to avoid scratches.
Make an entrance
Set the tone for your wedding day by focusing on first impressions. Flowers, balloons and streamers are all ways to highlight the entryway and increase your guests’ sense of excitement as they arrive. You can also include a wedding book where they can leave comments for you to re-read in the years to come.
Make your entrance memorable as well to kick off the day with a bang. Tailor this to you and your partner: herald your arrival with your favourite music, dance down the aisle with your friends, and ride off on bikes, by horseback or in cool cars.
Light it up
Often overlooked but all-important is the lighting. This will ensure you and your guests look and feel the most beautiful for photographs and will create a pleasant ambience that encourages a happy and relaxed atmosphere.
Work with your venue contact to optimise the lighting which should combine overhead lights and lamps to lift dark corners. A crackling fire and tabletop candles are a great way to bring warmth and add impact to autumn and winter weddings.
Celebrating outdoors? Hang fairy lights and lanterns in the tree branches to create a magical backdrop for night-long dancing.
Entertain the kids
Nothing ruins a wedding ceremony faster than crying babies and toddler tantrums. If you’ve settled on inviting children to your wedding, make sure there’s plenty to do to entertain the kids.
Set up a sketching and soft toy station in one of the church rooms where younger children can while away time during the ceremony with adult supervision. Make sure that the reception venue has an area for play too, and encourage guests with children to bring toys from home.
If you’re having a spring or summer wedding, make use of the outdoor space and encourage games in the garden. Kids can spend hours playing games such as I-spy, tig, hopscotch, football and ring toss.
Plan the transport
Last – but certainly not least! – don’t forget to plan the transport. Book your transfer to the ceremony, reception and your home or hotel well in advance to make sure that your wedding itinerary runs like clockwork.
Encourage your guests to book their transport early too, especially if you’re getting married in a remote location. Provide clear arrival and leaving times on the invite and include information about public transport and taxis. The last thing you want to be dealing with is stranded guests instead of calmly enjoying your special day!
