Top Tips for Helping Your Child with Maths

by Clare Leave a Comment

Collaborative Post

Maths can be a struggle for a lot of kids, but it doesn’t have to be. With the right care and attention, continued support and access to the best resources out there – parents can really help their kids with their maths. And it can also be a fun and engaging experience to develop with your child.

Here are some top tips you can try out with your child, that this prep school in London recommends, to improve your child’s performance in their maths studies.

Work on a little bit each day

To reinforce a habit of learning you will need to ensure that your child keeps on top of what they’re doing in class. To learn to enjoy maths, your child should try and do a little bit each day. Even if it’s just working on simple addition and subtract sums, you can help your child with getting used to the fact that maths will become a big part of their studying journey.

Break down the harder stuff into chunks

If there are really key areas where your child is visibly struggling, it’s worth looking at those issues first and breaking them down into more manageable chunks. It can be a lot for a child to manage, especially when they are reaching blocks where they aren’t finding as much progress as their peers. Reassure them throughout this process and take care to look at where they need that extra support.

Give your child the chance to work in their own way

You can oversee their work of course, but there’s going to be a time where they will need to work on their own terms. Give them the space to try and figure out some questions for themselves, and then they can turn to you should they feel they need an extra hand. Your child may surprise themselves with what they already know and how well they’re doing.

Consider looking into additional tuition

There may be a maths club for your child to go to in school, or there could be a tutor in the local area that can help your child with their studies. It’s not always down to the subject, but rather the way your child is currently taught in class at school, which is where a tutor can stand in and provide that extra support. They can tailor their lessons to suit your child’s learning style, which is great for more natural and guided development.
