Feeling stressed out? There are many ways to destress. A few common stressbusters that you may already be familiar with include exercise, meditation, listening to music, spending time with friends or taking a hot bath. But there are quite a few alternative options that you can also look into. Below are 7 examples of slightly strange stress-relief techniques that could help calm you down.
Coloring books
Coloring isn’t just for kids. In fact, there are a whole range of coloring books aimed at adults. This activity stimulates our creativity without requiring too much artistic talent and can put many people into a tranquil meditative state. This can make it a great stressbuster.
Earthing
Another unusual stress relief technique to try could be earthing. This involves connecting your body to the earth’s free electrons to neutralize positively charged ions in the body – or simply connecting yourself to the earth. A simple way to do this is to walk outside on natural ground in bare feet (yes, there’s a reason why walking on grass barefoot feels so good). However, you can also earth yourself from inside your own home by using earthing mats. These are mats that are connected to your home’s electricity supply that are able to soak up electrons in a similar fashion to outdoor ground.
Rage rooms
Ever felt so stressed that you want to break stuff? In most situations, this is not a healthy thing to do. But in a rage room, you can break stuff until your heart’s content. These are specially designed rooms full of objects that you can smash up with baseball bats and crowbars. You’re supplied with protective gear, so you won’t harm yourself. It’s a great way to let out that anger.
Journaling
Writing notes in a journal can also be a way to reduce stress. It’s a way of getting out your thoughts and feelings by putting them on paper. Nobody else has to see these notes – they are for you and for you only. Some people journal in diary form, while others create lists of things that are annoying them.
Scream therapy
Sometimes you can be so stressed that you just want to scream. This is what scream therapy (also known as ‘primal therapy’) is all about. There are scream therapy sessions classes you can go to scream with other people, but these are few and far between. Finding somewhere private to scream is the next best option. You could even take up activities like martial arts or tennis where screaming is encouraged to help generate power.
Decluttering
The idea of sifting through clutter might fill many people with dread. But the act of decluttering can actually be very therapeutic, because it’s a way of creating order within your life, which is often what you crave when you’re stressed. The hard part is getting started, but once you’ve begun, you’ll start to notice the positive impact. You don’t have to declutter your whole home – simply organizing a single room or even a cupboard can feel therapeutic.
Talking to pets (and plants)
Voicing your feelings is a great way to reduce stress. If you have no-one to vent to who you can truly open up to, why not vent to your pets – or even your houseplants. You’re interacting with another lifeform, which will ultimately make you feel less lonely. It’s better than keeping those thoughts in your head.
