First we have the joy that is the Farmers’ Market on a Saturday morning and now we’ll have an even better reason to visit Castle Terrace each Sunday during August. Starting this Sunday 3rd August between 11am-4pm there will be a stalls featuring Andante, Hugh Grierson Organic, Creelers, The Edinburgh Larder and Seriously Good Venison.
The pop-up aims to showcase Scotland’s outdoor eating scene and put Scottish street food on the map.
What is street food I hear you ask. Well ‘street food’ is ready-to-eat food, sold outdoors by vendors using portable stands or food trucks. Over 2.5billion people eat street food around the world each day and there’s no reason why Scotland can’t join in.
Market goers will be able to enjoy freshly prepared, made-to-order produce including oysters, foraged fruit cordials, vegetable layer cakes, venison kofta and artisan pasta dishes. A pop-up restaurant serving a menu of locally sourced, seasonal produce will also offer a seated outdoor brunch and lunch experience with Edinburgh Castle as its backdrop.
Event organiser Brian McAteer explained more about the concept:
“Until now, Scottish street food has been dominated by chips, burgers and kebabs.
“Street Food Sundays is about redefining Scottish street food by showcasing how our native larder can be used to create delicious takeaway-style eats like venison pies, pulled pork rolls, artisan breads and seasonal cakes.
“Visitors to the market can also enjoy the theatre of watching their food being made-to-order while meeting the farmers, producers and bakers in person.”
So why not get yourself down this Sunday. The open air market is free to attend and will have a family-friendly atmosphere, what more could you want, well apart from sunshine. Sounds good to me, we might even see you there 🙂
