Have you ever wondered why most Scottish skiers fly from the Edinburgh area? It seems like we are always seeing people heading off on their skiing holidays from Edinburgh airport.
Scotland itself is actually a native skiing nation, unlike the rest of the UK, but you will often find that many keen skiers will fly off to somewhere like the Alps for their big annual skiing holiday.
After doing a little research with one of the biggest UK tour operators, ski holidays from Edinburgh airport seem to be slightly cheaper than Glasgow equivalents for the more expensive 4 and 5 star packages, but skiing packages from Glasgow airport seem to be slightly cheaper than the exact same holidays from Edinburgh when comparing the bargain end of the ski deals spectrum.
It is little wonder that Scottish skiers choose to head off to the Alps to get their skiing fix. When it is affordable as the prices I’ve seen, who wouldn’t want to take some time out on some European slopes with their friends and family instead of staying at home?
But why exactly do most Scottish skiers fly from the Edinburgh area? We have shared some thoughts below.
It Is Affordable
As mentioned, we did some research and found that the bigger, more expensive packages tend to be slightly cheaper than those opting to fly from Glasgow. If you are looking to go on a skiing holiday on a budget, prices such as this are definitely something you will be considering.

It Is Easily Accessible From Many Areas
Edinburgh Airport is also a really easily accessible airport, easy to get to from a variety of Scottish towns and cities and flying to over 150 destinations. It is Scotland’s busiest airport and the sixth busiest in the whole of the UK. It is just off the M8 and M9 motorways meaning those living in Livingston, Falkirk or Motherwell may choose to fly from there. It is also easily accessible by public transport such as bus, train or tram!
If you are looking to fly to a skiing destination from a Scottish town or city, you may just find that Edinburgh is the nearest airport that flies to your chosen destination!
It Has Flights To Their Destination Of Choice (Or The Right Timings!)
Whilst most international airports will offer flights to most accessible destinations, you will sometimes find that one airport offers flights to a destination that the next nearest airport does not. Or they offer flights at a much more amenable time than the other airport so you don’t mind travelling a little bit further for the convenience.
If you live closer to another airport but Edinburgh is the only one that flies to your destination of your choice, you are going to pick Edinburgh Airport. If they both offer flights to that destination but Edinburgh is at a much nicer time of day to fly at, then you will likely choose Edinburgh Airport for that reason too!
These are just a few reasons why most Scottish skiers fly from the Edinburgh area. Can you think of any?
