Kids go free at Scone Place this summer – here’s why you should go too!
Scone Palace might be known for its grandeur and gardens, but it’s also one of Scotland’s most important historic sites – the original crowning place of Scottish Kings and a powerful symbol of the nation’s past. With Kids Go Free running from 30 June to 15 August 2025, there’s no better time to explore this legendary Perthshire landmark.

Here are five reasons history lovers (big and small) will be captivated by Scone Palace:
1. Home of the Stone of Destiny
Long before it was taken to Westminster in 1296, the sacred Stone of Destiny – the ancient symbol of Scottish monarchy – was housed at Scone. For centuries, kings were crowned while seated upon it, making the site a key part of Scotland’s royal heritage.
2. The Kings Were Crowned on Moot Hill
Known as the “Hill of Belief,” Moot Hill was the ceremonial crowning site of Scottish Kings. Today, visitors can stand where monarchs once stood – even pose for a photo on the replica Stone of Destiny, making it a perfect moment for budding rulers.
3. Centre of Religious and Political Power
Beyond royalty, Scone was once home to an Augustinian Abbey and served as a major hub of political and religious influence during the Middle Ages. Pilgrims, nobles and church leaders travelled from across the country to gather here.
4. Gothic Revival Grandeur
The current Palace, rebuilt in the early 1800s, is a striking example of Gothic Revival architecture. Inside, you’ll find portraits, period furnishings and heirlooms that bring centuries of history to life – from royal feuds to political unrest.
5. A Legacy That Lives On
Even after the original Stone was removed, Scone’s symbolic role never faded. Walking through the grounds today, you’re quite literally following in the footsteps of kings, rebels, and nation-shaping figures from Scotland’s past.
