Rural Recovery in Scotland: The Challenges and Opportunities

by Clare Leave a Comment

Vacation-In-Scotland

Scotland is known for its breathtaking rural scenery. So much so that rural life can be a dream come true. But it can also be isolating. That is not good for someone struggling with drug or alcohol addiction. Recovery in a rural setting is challenging because of a combination of geographic and social hurdles.

While rural recovery in Scotland can be more difficult than in urban areas, it is possible. But it requires commitment, a fair amount of knowledge, and a support system. Recovery also requires an individual’s desire to stop drinking or using drugs.

Three Barriers Rural Addicts Face

Whether it is drugs, alcohol, or both, addicts in Scotland’s rural areas face three major barriers to recovery:

1. Social Stigma

Rural areas are subject to something known as the ‘goldfish bowl’ effect. This is essentially a scenario in which everybody in town knows everybody else. Somebody with a drug or alcohol problem might feel like that problem is magnified because it’s public knowledge.

The social stigma of drug and alcohol misuse can be amplified in rural areas for this very reason. If the stigma is perceived as being strong enough, it could discourage someone from accessing a community program. An addict might even avoid seeing their GP because they are afraid of what people might think.

2. A Lack of Public Transport

People in need of recovery services often need public transport as well. But in Scotland’s rural areas, public transport is lacking. What does exist is often expensive and infrequent. Think of in this way: if the nearest recovery program requires a 2-hour bus ride, how likely is an addict to avail him – or herself of community services?

3. Seasonal Economies

As Scottish agriculture has waned, rural areas have become more dependent on hospitality and tourism to fuel local economies. Unfortunately, both lend themselves well to the hard-partying culture Scotland is known for. It can be difficult, especially for drinkers, to socialise without engaging in excess.

Opportunities Are Still Available

Although rural recovery in Scotland has its challenges, it also offers opportunities. For instance, many of Scotland’s most successful residential rehab clinics in Scotland purposely choose rural settings to help addicts make a clean break.

Even without residential rehab, recovery hubs in some rural communities are embracing a new wave of ecotherapy – a type of therapy that relies on outdoor activities to facilitate recovery. Hubs lean into hiking, gardening, meditating in nature, and other activities that promote natural relaxation, without the need for foreign substances.

Finally, the same close-knit structure that often contributes to the previously mentioned stigma can actually be turned around to help those in need. When communities come together to recognise that support is far better for substance abusers than ostracism, the close-knit nature of those communities can provide a level of support you will never find in urban environments.

More About Residential Rehab

Residential rehab in Scotland is what most of us think about when we hear about drug and alcohol recovery. Once again, many residential clinics are located in rural areas. So if an individual or family can afford it, rural recovery in Scotland through private means is very possible.

There are even statutory clinics throughout Scotland. These are clinics that offer high-quality residential treatment programs funded by the Scottish Government. Although there are certain restrictions and conditions to admittance, statutory clinics are ideal for people who need the structure and isolation of a residential program but cannot afford to pay for it.

Finding Services in Rural Areas

A post of this nature would not be complete without addressing the idea of locating addiction recovery services in rural areas. First and foremost, understand that you are not alone if you’re miles from an urban centre and struggling with drugs or alcohol. Second, we recommend the following three resources as a starting point.

1. Digital Healthcare

Most NHS boards throughout Scotland support telehealth. You can consult with a GP via a video consultation. You might also be able to arrange a consultation with an addiction specialist.

2. The Alcohol and Drug Partnership (ADP)

Scotland’s ADP coordinates across the country using a tiered system. You may be able to access help and support through your local GP or community pharmacy. If your area is

considered Tier 3 or 4, you may also have access to detox referrals or residential rehab.

3. A National Directory

Several well-known organisations offer national directories online. Scottish Families Affected by Alcohol and Drugs (SFAD) is a good example. They have a service finder tool on their website.

Granted, drug and alcohol recovery in rural Scotland comes with its own challenges. But if you are willing to commit and able to do some simple things, you can get yourself or a loved one on the road to recovery.
