Living just up the road from Dalkeith Country Park it has fast become my go to place during maternity leave. Alfie and I can be found wandering the park, often with a coffee in hand or heading down to some of our baby classes during the week. We’ve often said Restoration Yard within the Country Park is a lovely location and would be a great place to enjoy an evening meal. When they got in touch to invite us down to try out their new steak night, we jumped at the chance. It’s a beautiful location and can be enjoyed in all weathers.

Their steak night launched the previous month and was such a success they lined a few more up. Of course there are other things apart from steak on the menu to cater for all tastes but we both ordered steak. Something I can enjoy more now I can have it slightly pink again. Our welcome on the night was warm and friendly, they’d even gone out of their way to set a little place for Alfie. Being a family destination the staff are very attentive to both the adults and the children. Alfie was loving the attention and it made our dining experience pleasurable.

All the dishes on the menu have their ingredients either sourced from the Estate or as locally as they can. Picking our dishes was easy. We ordered and enjoyed the nice surroundings whilst we waited for our food to arrive. As the menu is smaller our dishes arrived pretty quickly. I had the chicken liver pate with toasted brioche, red onion chutney and Isle of Arran dressing. Mr E went for his usual of Orkney scallops and crispy bacon.

Each dish was tasty, the scallops were cooked well and for £6.50 it was great value. You’d easily pay more for a dish like this in town. My pate was smooth and full of flavour. The toasted brioche and dressing was a welcome addition and both plates were cleared very quickly. Next up was our steaks. I opted for the sirloin steak, medium cooked and Mr E had the rib eye steak medium rare. We also added a few sides to our order of onion rings and mac ‘n’ cheese, using the excuse of course that the mac ‘n’ cheese was for Alfie!

Both steaks were cooked to order and very tasty. They had a nice chargrilled flavour to them and melted in your mouth. My hand cut chips were delicious, with the sides of onion rings and mac ‘n’ cheese and everything that came with the steak we were soon full. I didn’t have much room left for dessert so had some vanilla and chocolate ice cream. Mr E always has room for dessert and ordered the chocolate tart. He can never say no to chocolate and judging by the fact he was very quiet when eating his dessert and he only offered me a bit when I asked it must have been good. Unfortunately due to a technology malfunction we don’t have any pictures of the chocolate tart so you will just have to take our word for it.
We managed to finish dinner just as Alfie was starting to protest it was past his bedtime. We had a lovely evening. The service was friendly and attentive, which is exactly how it is when I’m down having a coffee or lunch with some other mums. We had a lovely evening and if you think you’d like to give it a try they’re having another Steak Night on Friday 29th June. To book or for information you can give them a call on 0131 322 2572.
