What To Do When Renovating Your Bathroom

by Clare Leave a Comment

bathroom plan

Every homeowner decides to do up their house at some point or another. For many, that means tackling one room at a time to keep things affordable. One of the more common areas to start with is the bathroom, given how well-used it is.

You’ll want to get ready every morning in style, after all. Renovating your bathroom seems difficult, but it’s far from it. While it’ll take some work – depending on exactly what you’re doing – it shouldn’t enjoy the headaches you assume it’ll involve.

By following a few specific steps and focusing on a few particular areas, you can make sure it goes as smoothly as possible. Getting these done as early as possible minimises any stress you could end up going through.

There’s no reason not to focus on them, making it vital you spend time on six particular areas.

Renovating Your Bathroom: What You Need To Do

1. Get The Proper Materials

You’ll already know you’ll need materials when you’re renovating your bathroom. The likes of floor tiles by Tile and Bath Co., paint, and possibly even a new bathtub will all need to be bought. You shouldn’t simply go for the first ones you come across, however.

It’s worth spending time looking around and comparing options. It lets you find materials you actually want in your bathroom while also finding the best deal for you. While that means spending some more time on the process, the money it saves and the impact it has on your bathroom is worth it.

It reaps long-term dividends.

2. Ask Yourself A Few Questions

Renovating your bathroom means making a big change with the room. You’ll need to make sure this is for the better before you even start on the process. Understanding your needs and lifestyle is a significant part of this, so you’ll need to ask yourself a few questions before starting.

The largest of these are:

  • How much can you spend?
  • What don’t you like about how the bathroom currently looks?
  • How many people will be using the bathroom?
  • What are your daily habits?

Once you’ve answered these questions, you’ll be better able to design your new bathroom and install the right elements for you. You’ll have a bathroom you can actually be proud of and love.

3. Know The Basics

You’ll need to actually understand the basics of a bathroom to make sure you can renovate it properly. It lets you know exactly what you can and can’t do with the room, as well as figure out what you should avoid.

That starts with understanding the space you have to work with. There’s no point in considering a walk-in shower and a freestanding bathtub if you don’t have the space for both of them, for example.

The more you understand about your bathroom and the potential renovations you can do, the better you can plan out your design and get everything done. It’ll also avoid any potential issues in the future.

4. Don’t Forget Storage

Your bathroom has some specific uses, such as showering and getting ready for work in the morning. That doesn’t mean you should design the renovations specifically for functionality. You should also keep storage in mind when you’re putting the design together.

While these could be small, you’ll have quite a few things you’ll need to keep in the bathroom, with shampoos and conditioners being the most notable. As small as these seem, they take up quite a bit of space when they’re all added together.

If there isn’t any storage space for them, you wouldn’t have anywhere for them. A built-in shower niche, floating shelves on the wall, and custom vanities can all be recommended for this. Not only will they be great for storage, but they’ll end up looking nicer than you’d expect.

5. Get The Right Bells & Whistles

When quite a few people consider renovating their bathrooms, they focus on the basics. They’ll simply want to have a new bathtub installed, and maybe even get the room retiled. There’s so much more you can do, however.

By knowing what kind of bells and whistles you can get, you can make your bathroom more appealing and functional than you’d think. Some of the more notable of these include:

  • Non-slip flooring
  • Body jets
  • Smart showers
  • Heated floors

While these bells and whistles could cost more than their standard counterparts, the added features they bring to your bathroom are worth it. You could end up finding yourself spending more time in there than you used to.

6. Don’t Overlook The Toilet

The toilet will naturally be one of the most important elements of your bathroom, but you’d be surprised by how many people leave this to last when renovating. It’s not something you should overlook when you’re renovating your bathroom, however.

It’s worth spending a bit of time and effort into making sure you pick the best one for you. That goes far beyond making sure it’s the right size and colour. You can get toilets in various styles, and many can even come with multiple features.

If you’re willing to go a bit more high-end, you could get a toilet with heated seats, for example. You could be surprised by how much of an impact this will have on your morning routine. When you’re doing this, try getting one that uses less water, as it’ll be better for the environment.

Renovating Your Bathroom: Wrapping Up

Renovating your bathroom is far from as complicated as you could think it’ll be. While there’s work in any kind of renovations, going about it the right way makes sure it shouldn’t be stressful. Using a few specific tips can help with this process.

Getting the right materials, going all-out with the bells and whistles, and asking yourself a few questions – among other steps – all minimise the headaches you’ll need to deal with. You shouldn’t have to get stressed when you’re renovating your bathroom, so why put up with it?

Use each of the above steps to make it straightforward.
