Awkward Productions return to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with another gloriously unhinged comedy romp – and this time, they’re bringing cake, castles and a chaotic queer prince.
Fresh from the cult success of Diana: The Untold and Untrue Story and Gwyneth Goes Skiing, Fringe darlings Awkward Productions are back with their latest festive fever dream: The Fit Prince (Who Gets Switched on the Square in the Frosty Castle the Night Before [INSERT PUBLIC HOLIDAY HERE]).
Premiering at the Pleasance Courtyard this August, before a festive transfer to King’s Head Theatre, London this winter, the show promises a dizzyingly camp cocktail of interactive comedy, original music, and romcom parody – served with a healthy dollop of queer joy.
Set in the not-at-all-made-up land of Swedonia, the plot follows Aaron Butcher, a struggling New York baker, who is mysteriously summoned to bake a wedding cake for a royal prince. Hijinks, heartstrings and inevitable holiday magic ensue. There’s a puppet, a baking disaster, and probably some snow. And yes – of course there’s a musical number (or ten), courtesy of Golden Globe-nominated composer Leland (Troye Sivan, RuPaul’s Drag Race, Kylie Minogue).
The show stars Linus Karp and Joseph Martin, real-life partners and long-time creative collaborators, appearing as romantic leads opposite each other for the first time – just months ahead of their own wedding. Fans of chaotic queer theatre, musical mischief and subversive seasonal spirit are in for a treat.
Co-produced with King’s Head Theatre, The Fit Prince is both a spoof and a love letter to every Hallmark or Netflix romcom you’ve ever loved to hate. Think: royal confusion, mistaken identities, snow-drenched castles, and tropes turned gloriously on their heads.
Awkward Productions has built a cult following for their signature mix of high-camp chaos and smart, satirical storytelling. Critics have called their work “a masterclass of parody” ★★★★★ (The Skinny), “absurd, camp, chaotic, and hilarious” ★★★★★ (Attitude), and “the most unhinged piece of theatre in existence” ★★★★★ (Broadway Baby). One Daily Mail review summed it up more succinctly: “repellent trash.” Frankly, what more could you want?
Whether you’re in it for the laughs, the love story, or just to witness whatever “Jenny Puppetson” is – this show is shaping up to be one of this year’s most joyously ridiculous Fringe offerings.
Catch The Fit Prince (Who Gets Switched…) at the Pleasance Courtyard, 30 July – 25 August, before its London run at King’s Head Theatre from 2 December 2025 – 3 January 2026.
