Moving day is finally here! The boxes are stacked, the nerves are buzzing, and the kettle is (hopefully) still accessible. Whether you’re moving across town or to a new city, these tips will help you glide through the chaos of moving day with calm, confidence, and hopefully a celebratory biscuit at the end.
Rise and shine early
Set your alarm a little earlier than usual. You’ll want time for a proper breakfast, a last-minute check, and a moment to breathe before the whirlwind begins. It’s amazing how much smoother things go when you’re not rushing from the get-go. Plus, it gives you time to deal with any unexpected hiccups, like missing tape or sleepy helpers.
Get in some comfy clothes, sturdy shoes, and layers you can peel off when the lifting gets sweaty. Remember, you’ll be bending and lifting all day, so dress like you mean business. And don’t forget gloves!
Keep your essentials close
Pack a “moving day survival kit” in a clearly labelled bag or box. Include your phone charger, snacks, water bottle, loo roll, keys, wallet, and any meds. A first aid kit also can’t hurt. This box should stay with you, not in the van. Think of it as your lifeline. You’ll be grateful when you need a quick snack or a tissue mid-chaos and know exactly where to find it.
Speaking of snacks: moving is hungry work, so have lots of easy-to-grab snacks on hand, such as bananas or cereal bars. And don’t forget drinks! A well-fed crew is a happy crew.
Do a final sweep and prep
Before the movers arrive (or your mates with vans), do a last walk-through. Check cupboards, behind doors, under beds. It’s shocking how often things hide in plain sight, especially chargers and socks. A quick sweep can save you a trip back later or a panicked call to the landlord.
If you haven’t already, grab a marker and label boxes with the room they’re going to. “Kitchen – mugs” is way more helpful than “misc.” Clear labels also help everyone know where things go, and they’ll save you hours of unpacking confusion. Bonus tip: use coloured stickers for each room to make unloading even easier. Also, did you declutter beforehand?
Be the boss of the boxes
If you’ve hired movers, give them a quick tour and let them know what’s going where. If you’re DIY-ing it, assign roles: lifters, packers, door holders. A little coordination avoids chaos and keeps things moving smoothly. And if you’re using a hired van, make sure everyone knows how to load it safely and securely.
Additionally, make sure you’ve got temporary van insurance sorted before the first box is loaded. It’s quick to arrange and gives you peace of mind for the day. You never know when a bump or scrape might happen, and it’s better to be safe than sorry. Plus, it’s one less thing to worry about when you’re already juggling a million tasks.
Protect the floors
Whether it’s muddy boots or furniture scuffs, your floors are in the firing line. Lay down old sheets, towels, or cardboard to keep things clean and scratch-free. This is especially important if you’re renting and want your deposit back. It also helps prevent slips and keeps things tidy for the final handover.
Take a moment
And lastly, before you shut the door for the last time, pause. Snap a photo, say goodbye, do a little dance. It’s okay to feel emotional; this place held memories! Celebrate the moment, then step into your next chapter with a smile.
