The Art of Travelling Light as a Minimalist Explorer

by Clare Leave a Comment

Travelling light is a skill that takes time to master. But it is also necessary for a minimalist explorer who wants to enjoy their excursions without any hassle. Getting around isn’t easy sometimes, but from using a great backpack to miniature essentials, here’s a quick guide.

Focus on Specific Gear for the Day

There are tons of things you can take with you when out and about. But most of the time, they will just get in the way. If you stay at a hotel, you can leave most of your stuff there. Then again, there will be things you will need when exploring. Make a plan and only take what you think you will need. For example, if you plan on taking architecture shots in Italy, you can use luggage storage in Milan Cathedral and other places to securely stow the extras you will need later on.

Find a Suitable Backpack

You probably don’t want to be lugging loads of stuff all over the place when on holiday. But there are essentials you will need. Depending on what you have planned, you may need a change of clothes, a laptop, a camera and other necessities. Luggage storage isn’t available everywhere, so make sure you’ve got a good backpack. This can’t be understated. Cheaper ones won’t last long, will hurt your shoulders and could even let rain seep in and destroy your valuables.

A Minimalist Explorer Needs Good Shoes

Another crucial thing you will need when exploring lightly is a great pair of shoes. Well, actually, boots are better. Quality walking or hiking boots are made for all different types of terrain and will stop your feet from taking too much damage. The average city tourist walks between 2 and 3 miles per day. So your feet will get sore. From walking around town to enjoying some of the best walks in Scotland, your feet deserve boots that will keep them protected and dry.

Buy Travel-Sized Toiletries

Venturing out far away from home means you don’t have access to everything you are used to. If you’re going on a walkabout, there’s a slim chance there will be many bathrooms around. Of course, you don’t want to go lugging half your essentials around with you. But you can get mini toiletries that fit right into your backpack’s pockets. From shower gel to mouthwash, be sure to pack the things that will help keep you clean and hygienic when you set off on a little adventure.

Roll Your Clothing when Packing

Space is severely limited when you want to travel lightly. Choosing what you need is one of the hardest parts because you don’t want to use up too much space. But you can help yourself out by packing a little differently than usual. Rather than compressing your clothing, roll up your garments instead. This is a more efficient use of the limited space inside your suitcase, backpack or gym bag. In fact, this is how military personnel are trained to pack for that reason.

Summary

Taking what you need when you need, it will help you travel lightly as a minimalist explorer on your next holiday. Of course, good shoes will prevent misery when out and about. You can also make the most of the limited packing space by rolling up your clothing instead of folding it.
