How many marriages end in divorce?

by Clare Leave a Comment

The end of a marriage is sometimes inevitable. Divorce is a reality for millions of people around the world, despite the fact that in many countries, marriage is a highly valued institution in many cultures.

Divorce rates have been increasing every year and many couples have to look for alternatives to make this path much easier, such as MIAM Mediation, a way to manage the separation and avoid possible conflicts that may arise after separation.

Divorce statistics worldwide

Divorce does not understand geography. There are countries where it occurs more and in others less, depending on the culture, the facilities to do so and the social values.

Countries with the highest divorce rates

One of the countries where there are more divorces per year is the Maldives. Despite being a destination where newlyweds go to celebrate their honeymoon, the reality is that there is a rate approaching 50%. Many of the cases are related to economic difficulties and cultural factors such as concentrated marriages.

Another of the countries where most divorces occur is the United States. Despite the fact that little by little there are fewer separation processes, the reality is that between 40 and 50 % of marriages end in divorce.

Countries with the lowest divorce rates

On the other hand, there are countries where divorce rates are very low, even non-existent, due to cultural or religious influences.

The most striking case is India. This country has less than 1% of marriages that end in divorce, since Indian society deeply values marriage, and the legal processes for divorce are complex and long.

In addition, in countries like Chile, divorce has been allowed for only a few years. This South American country legalized it in 2004, being one of the last countries to accept this practice, due to the influences of the Catholic Church.

Divorce trends in the UK

One of the countries where divorce rates have been fluctuating in recent decades is the United Kingdom. But why is that?

Key factors driving divorce in the UK

The implementation of “no-fault” divorce in 2022 has simplified the process, allowing couples to separate without the need to attribute fault to one of the parties. This has reduced stigma and facilitated access to divorce and family mediation services.

In addition, British society today emphasizes mental health and personal well-being, leading more people to leave relationships they consider harmful or unsatisfactory.

Regional variations in divorce rates across the UK

Divorce is not the same in all parts of the UK. For example, in Scotland, rates are much lower compared to England. However, there are two major cities where there are more divorces per year: Glasgow and Edinburgh.

But, if there is one area where rates are lower, it is Northern Ireland. It has the lowest rates in the UK, probably due to more conservative cultural and religious influences.

Why do marriages end in divorce?

The end of a marriage is rarely the result of a single factor. In general, divorces are caused by a combination of external and internal problems affecting couples.

External stressors impacting marriages

The external problems that most affect a marriage are economic problems, work pressures, and situations such as the COVID-19 pandemic that exposed and aggravated pre-existing problems in many relationships.

Internal relationship issues

But, if we talk about internal problems, we find that lack of communication between couples is the main cause of marriages, not only in the UK, but also in the rest of the world. In addition, infidelity and differences in goals and values are the 2nd and 3rd leading causes of divorce.

Future predictions for marriage and divorce trends

As societies evolve, the dynamics of marriage and divorce also change. Today, marriages are later in life and many couples do not want to marry or maintain an open relationship, reducing the number of traditional divorces.

In addition, increased support from professionals also helps prevent unnecessary separations by resolving conflicts between the two parties before divorce is considered.
