Multi-award-nominated comedian, actor and writer Kieran Hodgson is set to make his highly anticipated return to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with a brand new hour of political comedy and character-driven storytelling in Voice of America. The show runs from 30th July to 25th August (excluding 23rd) at 9:30pm in Pleasance Courtyard: Beyond, with tickets on sale from Tuesday 1st April via pleasance.co.uk and edfringe.com.
Hodgson, a four-time Edinburgh Comedy Award Best Show nominee (2023, 2018, 2016, 2015) and one of the Telegraph’s 50 funniest comedians of the 21st Century, returns to the Fringe following a sell-out run at London’s Soho Theatre. Voice of America marks a new chapter in his celebrated career as he takes on the chaotic heart of American culture and politics—with all the mimicry, musicality and meticulous character work that fans have come to love.
From Sandwich Guy to Stand-Up Satire
The seeds of Voice of America were planted when Hodgson was cast in Warner Brothers’ superhero epic The Flash, opening the film with a scene-stealing turn as the now-legendary “Sandwich Guy”. There was only one problem—his American accent didn’t quite land. That challenge sparked a journey into the many voices of modern America, from the roar of Trump rallies to the glamour of Taylor Swift concerts, the defiance of Pride Marches to the chaos of January 6th.
In this bold new hour, Hodgson explores how a country divided by noise still manages to inspire hope—and asks whether a man from Holmfirth with 44 Parkruns under his belt can do justice to the American dream.
Fringe Favourite, TV Star, and Accidental Royal
Known for his standout solo shows Lance, Maestro, ’75 and Big in Scotland, Hodgson has long been a Fringe favourite, consistently praised for his sharp wit and pitch-perfect performances. His previous show, Big In Scotland, earned him a fourth nomination for Best Show at the 2023 Edinburgh Comedy Awards and five-star reviews across the board.
Away from the stage, Hodgson is a familiar face on screen. He starred for five series in the BBC sitcom Two Doors Down and led Channel 4’s Prince Andrew: The Musical, a satirical sensation that drew widespread acclaim. His TV work also includes See How They Run (alongside Saoirse Ronan and Sam Rockwell), All My Friends Hate Me, The Irregulars (Netflix), Upstart Crow, and Famalam, as well as his Royal Television Society Award-winning How We Forgot To Save The Planet.
Critical Acclaim
Critics have hailed Hodgson as “a maestro” (Chortle), “spellbinding” (The Skinny), and “faultless” (Herald Sun), with Voice of America set to continue that tradition. His previous shows have been described as “comic symphonies” (Chortle) and “hilarious, moving, daft and fast-paced” (The Observer), while Big In Scotland was deemed “the kind of show you want to bottle up and take home with you” (Mail on Sunday).
As The Guardian noted, “there is not a more exquisitely performed hour of humour on the Fringe right now.”
