When it’s sunny out, there’s no place like your garden to chill. Since you can’t really hang outside when it’s freezing, it’s smart to make the most of it when the weather’s nice. Whether it’s sunbathing, reading a book, enjoying a glass of wine or hosting a party for family and friends, the garden offers lots of opportunities for enjoyment. But there’s one buzzkill that can ruin the vibe: nosy neighbours peeping over the fence. It’s hard to unwind when you feel like you’re under a microscope, and it might even make you avoid your garden altogether. Thankfully there are things you can do to help maintain your privacy. Here are a few ways to go about it!
Buy Taller Fences
Many older homes were built with 4 foot fencing in back gardens as standard, but for many of us this isn’t high enough for full privacy. The standard height for garden fencing is now 6 foot, so replacing it with something like this will definitely make you feel more concealed and hidden from view. You could even add a trellis to the top to give you an extra little bit of height as well. Fencing is expensive but a great investment in the garden, go with a professional and have concrete fence posts (rather than wooden) as it will last much longer.
Add Greenery
If you’ve got prying eyes peeking in from the bottom of your garden, why not plant some tall greenery ? Hedging or speedy growing shrubs and trees add beauty and life to your yard but also give you some privacy too. You can snag mature trees ready to go straight into the ground, or choose for fast growing varieties if you dont mind waiting for them to fully establish.
Buy a Pergola
Pergolas are great, as you can sit outside and still enjoy the open air but with a bit more privacy. Go with a luxury aluminium pergola if you want it to stand the test of time, these come with adjustable roofs too so you can decide how much light or shade you want in the garden. Encouraging climbing plants like ivy and roses to climb up the posts adds extra coverage and looks stunning too. Throw in some big potted plants and hanging baskets to amp up the privacy even more. Then a seating area or table underneath means you can chill without feeling like you’re on display for the neighbours.
Take Advantage of Blind Spots In The Garden
Blind spots in the garden where neighbours can’t see from there windows make the best places for chillout areas. That way you can sunbathe, eat or relax without knowing you’re being directly overlooked. It depends which direction your neighbours are facing as to where these blind spots will be, but take some time to figure it out.
