Home Repairs You Need To Stop Putting Off

by Clare Leave a Comment

With so much to do and so many obstacles to get past, it’s little wonder that home maintenance and repairs often get pushed to the bottom of the list – we’re busy people, and there always seems to be something just that little bit more important to do, especially when those home repairs don’t seem all that urgent (and even if they are urgent, so are plenty of other things in life).

However, the issue is that putting these things off, no matter what the reason might be, can lead to bigger problems, more expensive repairs, and even safety hazards. That’s why it’s far better to get on with things as soon as you know there’s a problem rather than waiting; it can save you a lot of bother. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the repairs that really do need your attention – read on to find out more.

Leaking Taps And Pipes

What’s that sound? Drip, drip, drip… Annoying, isn’t it? However, as time goes on, you can get used to even the most annoying of sounds, and a dripping tap can fall into that category – in the end, you might not even hear it anymore. Isn’t that a good thing? The answer is no – if you don’t hear it anymore, that means nothing’s going to get done to fix it, and the problem is highly likely to just keep getting worse and worse.

The fact is that you’re not just losing water; you’re losing money at this point. A leaky tap can waste hundreds of litres of water over time, which can drive your water bill up massively if you’re on a meter. Plus, leaks under sinks or inside your walls can cause water damage, leading to mould and potentially problems with the entire structure of the building.

The good news is that fixing this kind of problem – the leaks, that is – is quite a straightforward job, and could even be a DIY situation, but the longer you leave it, the more complex the whole thing becomes, and you might even find you have to have walls removed to get at the issue, which is never a great situation to be in. So that’s why this is a problem you really shouldn’t put off.

Roof Repairs

Your roof is one of the most important parts of your home’s structure, but a lot of homeowners don’t even think about checking their roof, and they don’t want to deal with repairs because, as the old saying goes, ‘out of sight, out of mind’. The problem is, though, that putting this job off can eventually mean you have no choice but to do it, even if it’s not convenient because the roof itself starts to leak or break apart, and then you have problems not just on your home but in it too – it’ll be damp and mouldy and expensive to heat, for example.

Take a look at your roof on a regular basis (at least every year, but ideally every six months) and as soon as you see a problem, get the experts in to fix it – it’ll save you a lot of problems in the long term. Of course, eventually every roof has to be repaired, so it’s a good idea to have some savings in place so that when you need expert cold roof construction you can get it done sooner rather than later – you won’t regret that decision, that’s for sure.

Clear Your Gutters

Clogged or broken gutters might not seem like a big problem – in the grand scheme of things, who really cares if there are some leaves and other bits of debris in the gutters around your home? – but the truth is that this can cause a massive problem. Gutters are designed to direct water away from the building they’re attached to, and, of course, away from that building’s foundations. When the gutters are all blocked up and clogged, it means water isn’t going to be able to flow away, and instead it’s going to stick around causing problems, which could include erosion, basement flooding, or foundation damage.

That’s why you shouldn’t put off dealing with your gutters, and actually cleaning them out properly twice a year is ideal. Plus, not only will you make sure there aren’t any blockages, but you’ll also be able to see if there are any splits and cracks, and then take action to deal with them – the sooner that’s done, the fewer problems you’ll have and your home will stay protected from water damage.

Cracked Caulking

If you’ve got windows and doors – and every home has windows and doors! – then you’re going to have caulking, or at least, you should have caulking. Caulk is the stuff that goes around the windows and doors and fills in gaps and cracks that would otherwise let air escape, meaning your heating system has to do a lot more work and cost you a lot more money for the privilege.

The problem is that even if there was caulk around your windows and doors to begin with, it’s not going to last forever and after a while – how long depends on how good it was to begin with a lot of the time, but even high-quality caulk will eventually need to be replaced – you’ll need to remove what’s there and re-caulk the area. It might sound like a horrible job to do and one that’s going to take up a lot of your time and need plenty of expertise, but the fact is that this is one of the easier jobs on this list, and anyone can do it. You just need to buy the caulk and a special caulk gun to apply it, and that’s it – although it’s better to remove the old caulk entirely rather than just trying to patch it up because the end result will look better and it will be more effective too.

Faulty Electrical Outlets

Electricity isn’t something you should ever play around with, and it’s definitely not an issue that you should ignore in your home, even if it seems to be a small thing that isn’t causing too much of a problem right now. The fact is that just like a lot of the other things on this list, putting the repair or replacement job off can lead to much bigger problems in the future; problems that cost more and that can cause plenty of damage.

If you’ve got any outlets that aren’t working, that might just seem like an inconvenience, but it’s potentially much more than that, and there’s always going to be a reason why a socket doesn’t work – don’t just accept it, and instead call an electrician to take a look. They’ll be able to tell you what the problem is and fix it safely and that’s vital. Something as small as a light switch or socket that doesn’t work might not seem like a big issue, but what if it was the first sign of something dangerous that posed a risk to everyone in your home? It just makes sense to deal with the problem as soon as possible rather than hoping for the best.

Damaged Or Worn Flooring

Worn-out flooring looks pretty bad and is definitely going to affect how your home looks and feels, but did you know it can also be a safety hazard, so it might actually be worse than you think? Loose tiles, torn carpet, or uneven hardwood can lead to trips and falls, which is why it’s so much better not to leave this job at the bottom of your to-do list and instead move it to the top – you don’t want an accident to happen.

You can do minor fixes like securing loose parts or patching small holes in your carpet yourself, but if the whole thing needs to be replaced, it’s best to get an expert to do it as they’ll work more quickly and the result will look great.
