Gardening Mistakes that will Make your Space Look Unkept

by Clare Leave a Comment

Collaborative Post

A lush lawn, colourful flower beds, and shapely hedges are all features that can help you to make the most out of your curb appeal. If you want to try and transform your outdoor space into a luxurious oasis, then this can take a lot of time and money. Even if you are willing to invest though, you still need to make sure that you avoid these gardening mistakes. If you don’t, then you may find that your time and effort is wasted, and this is the last thing you need.

Mowing too Low

If you happen to cut your grass too low, then this will really work against you. If you mow your grass too low, then this will slice off the food-producing blades and this can stunt root growth. With weaker roots, you can expect more weeds and thinner grass. Make sure that your lawnmower blades are sharp and also cut your grass to the highest height possible. If you can do this, then you will soon find that your garden looks way better. Remember that a lot of grass can be clipped shorter in spring rather than summer, and this comes down to the fact that the lawn is under less stress from drought and heat.

Not Creating a Master Plan

Before you break out your shovel, try and sketch out a map of your garden. A blueprint will save you a lot of headaches and it will help you out later on in the progress. It will give you an idea of how your garden is going to look when everything comes together, and it will save you from having to dig up your plants at a later date. If you can, make sure that you are arranging your plants from front to back, and from tallest to shortest. This will allow you to see everything and it will also help you to make sure that everything is getting enough sun. Make sure that you focus on colour where possible to make sure that your garden is nice and appealing when everything is in full bloom.

Not Thinking about Sun or Shade

If you want to make sure that your garden is long-lasting, then you have to make sure that your garden gets plenty of light. Make sure that you track how many hours of sun you get in every location of your garden, and take note of the time of day as well. Plants that need full sun will need a minimum of six hours every day. Part-sun plants will require around four, and full-shade plants will need morning sunlight, so make sure that you keep this in mind when the time comes for you to maintain your garden.

Not Giving Plants the Space they Need

If you can, you have to consider the mature size of each plant that you buy before you put them in the bed or pot. Check the tag on your plants so you can see the recommended spacing. This can be measured from the middle of the plant to the middle of the neighbouring plant. Just make sure that you space everything nicely apart so you can spend less time worrying about disease or pests. If you have a lot of open space that you just can’t fill then why not visit Scotts of Thrapston so you can make sure that you are investing in something that is easy to maintain, as well as adding some functional purpose to your garden and home?

Not Using Mulch

Mulch is absolutely essential if you want to try and stop your soil from drying out. It also helps plants to deal with various fluctuations in temperature as well. If you have too much mulch, then you may find that this stops the roots from being able to grow and you may also find that bark ends up decaying as well. Make sure that you are spreading the mulch over the ground evenly, and that it is around 3 inches deep. Make sure that it is 3 inches away from the base of any tree trunks too so you can stop issues from happening. Remember, shallow-rooted shrubs only need around an inch of mulch, so keep this in mind if at all possible. It will help you in the long run and it will also help you to keep your garden looking fantastic. If you are having a hard time with things like this, then remember, there’s nothing wrong with consulting a gardening expert or hiring someone to take care of your garden for you.
