This August at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Forget-Me-Not arrives with soul-stirring music, raw honesty, and a spotlight on the creative lives of women. Brought to the stage by two award-winning talents – Julie Lake (Orange is the New Black) and Annie Macleod – this intimate musical play is a powerful exploration of female friendship, motherhood, identity, and the complicated choices women face when creativity collides with caregiving.
Based on their real-life experiences, Julie and Annie play childhood friends reunited in the thick of motherhood. One is trying for a second child while the other has left her marriage to pursue music. When a painful rift over pregnancy breaks their bond, a quiet birthday gesture over a year later begins to bridge the silence. What follows is a moving portrait of rebuilding – not as who they were, but as who they’ve become.
Directed by Peter Cook (Never Sleep Alone), Forget-Me-Not features a rich blend of guitar, piano, and lush harmonies. Its storytelling is heartfelt, often funny, and deeply personal – touching on the grief of unlived lives, the contradictions of ambition and guilt, and the strength of female friendships that endure through judgment, rupture and change.
With just two chairs, a keyboard, and their voices, Julie and Annie prove it’s never too late to reclaim your voice. A must-see for anyone who has ever navigated the messy, beautiful in-between of motherhood and identity.
