You’ve heard about the Cairngorms and Galloway Forest Park, but what about the Pentland Hills Regional Park? If you’re exploring Scotland on two wheels, it’s always worth tapping into this incredible area of natural scenery. Rolling fields, glassy reservoirs and lofty peaks make it hard to believe that the Pentlands lie just ten miles from Edinburgh.
Whether by day trip from the city or on a separate excursion, it’s always worth getting familiar with the best days out in the Pentland Hills.
Five top tips for your visit to the Pentland Hills
1) Check out Harlaw Reservoir
If you need a family-friendly activity to get started in the Pentlands, look no further than Harlaw Reservoir. A stroll around this stunning body of water is just 3.5km long. You can park at the Harlaw House Visitor Centre, which also has toilets available for you to use.
Following a clear path running alongside the reservoir, you’ll discover woodland trails and all the creatures living there too. Whether it’s looking for birds and squirrels or seeing who can find climb the best tree, there’s plenty to keep the kids occupied, too.
2) Get there safely
As you get stuck into planning your visit, it’s important to remember that a reliable car will only enhance your journey – especially if you’re travelling far.
Knowing that you can simply set off and arrive at the expected time gives you more peace of mind to enjoy it all. If you need to buy a new set of wheels before your big road trip, dependable Volkswagen used cars make a brilliant starting point. Alternatively, you could make an eco-friendly choice and use public transport instead.
3) Catch the sunset
Fancy a longer walk and the chance to see some mesmerising colours on the horizon?
The rectangular route that summits Turnhouse Hill and Carnethy Hill, followed by a gentle stroll alongside Logan Burn, is incredibly popular with walkers.
Parking is available at the Flotterstone Ranger Centre, but it’s best to arrive early and secure yourself a space if you’re visiting in peak summer periods. If you’re feeling hungry for more after the second climb, you can head to Scald Law and loop back again.
4) Take the dog
There’s nothing better than action-packed days out with your loved ones, including the dog. Fortunately, the Pentland Hills is incredibly dog-friendly, with plenty of open green spaces for your pooch to romp around and play in.
Just remember that much of the Regional Park is occupied by wildlife, including deer, or used for sheep farming. Unless your dog is very well trained and comes back straight away when called, it’s a good idea to keep him or her on a lead.
Practical advice for dog owners can be found online via the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, including guidelines for walking near livestock too.
5) Challenge yourself
Lastly, you’re already in the perfect place for a physical challenge, so why not get stuck in?
Starting from Threipmuir car park, you can climb West Kip, East Kip and Scald Law on a route that pushes the 12km mark. This makes a brilliant choice for those visiting the Pentlands from Edinburgh, with a convenient start point not too far from the main road and the charming village of Balerno. Don’t forget to pack a waterproof jacket, though!
