Drake & Morgan’s Northern Star: The Refinery St Andrew Square, Edinburgh
Drake & Morgan is a stylish and contemporary collection of individual all-day bar and restaurants.Founded in September 2008, it has a portfolio of 10 bars and restaurants in landmark sites across London. Sites include The Refinery at Bankside, The Parlour at Canary Wharf, The Refinery Regent’s Place and four City sites: The Happenstance, The Folly, The Anthologist and The Fable. The group has most recently opened Drake & Morgan at King’s Cross and The Commission at Heathrow T4. What makes this collection of bars different is that they are all are open for breakfast through to supper and cocktails and offer a variety of flexible eating/drinking spaces and private areas but each venue offers a unique experience, operating independently with clearly defined offers and customised site-specific experiences.
The guys over at Gastrogays have been flooding our twitter feed with lovely pictures of their visits to Drake & Morgan venues so we couldn’t help get excited when we heard they were making their way North and opening up their first bar & restaurant in Edinburgh at the end of November (yet another way to prolong the big 3-0 celebrations?!).
Why are we so excited?
Well The Refinery St Andrew Square is set to bring a touch of glamour to the city. Spread across two beautifully designed floors and with floor to ceiling windows all separated by a wonderful spiral staircase, it’s set to be like something out of a movie (cue practicing our elegant walking). Of course every great bar and restaurant needs a show stopping bar which is set to be illuminated showcasing the various spirits and wine on offer.
From replenishing breakfasts through to power business lunches, late-night dinners, cocktails, masterclasses and pop-ups, the new bar & restaurant will be an all-day escape for Edinburgh’s most discerning drinkers and diners. Here visitors can enjoy a drink and casual dining or if it’s a more intimate affair then towards the rear there will be an intimate restaurant and open-plan kitchen with sit-at counter dining, bringing all of the action of the grill to diners who want a front row seat.
Curiosity will almost certainly lead guests up the staircase to the restaurant’s library lounge where they’ll be able to sink into comfortable armchairs draped in fur. There will also be an al fresco terrace, complete with blankets and hot water bottles for year-round revelry.
What about the food and drink?
The Refinery St Andrew Square will be keeping cocktails above the standards of even the most demanding connoisseurs, serving up seasonally inspired concoctions influenced by the latest global trends. The varied menu should appeal to everyone with small plates and mezze boards, ideal to share available whilst larger mains – served from lunch to late – will come in the form of beautiful burgers such as the buttermilk chicken burger or wagyu beef burger. Superfood salads and classics such as hot smoked salmon with spinach, sun-dried tomatoes and pine nuts; parmesan crusted chicken with soft polenta, blistered cherry tomatoes; and lamb chops with crushed new potatoes and mint jus are just a few examples of the dishes diners can expect to find. Those with a sweet tooth can indulge in a selection of moreish puddings. The sound of that is making us drool already. Open seven days a week, The Refinery St Andrew Square’s opening will channel everything people have come to love of a Drake & Morgan bar & restaurant, while adding bold new touches across all aspects from the fantastic drink and food to the inspiring interiors, ready for the new Edinburgh scene.
Watch this space to find out how our first visit went.
