Garden decks are hugely popular right now, and rightly so. After all, they are not only attractive and robust, but easy to maintain and keep clean. Unfortunately, for many of us, the cost of having a garden deck professionally installed is something that can stand in our way. However, the good news is that it is entirely possible to install a garden deck DIY-style. You can even find a guide on how to do just that below.

Step 1: Assemble all your tools, supplies and safety equipment
Before you start any DIY project, you must gather together all the tools, supplies and safety equipment you will need. First of all, for a decking project, you will need your plan or blueprint. You will also need items including an electric saw, an electric drill, a shovel, screws, and a spirit level. You will also need a measuring tape for measuring and cutting the boards.
Last of all, just like for every DIY project you do, you will need the proper safety equipment. For this project, waterproof safety gloves are vital, and safety goggles that will protect your eyes when cutting wood, and using electric tools.
Step 2: Ground prep
This next step is all about preparing the ground properly for the deck installation. First of all, this means clearing it of any items or debris. Then you’ll need to take your shovel and spirit level and dig out the ground so it’s level.
Step 3: Cut the boards
The next step once the ground has been levelled is to cut the composite or timber decking boards to the correct size. To do this you will need to use your tape measure and electric saw (circle saw). Remember the adage here: measure twice and cut once as accuracy is vital.
Step 4: Assemble the subframe
The subframe is like the foundation of your deck, so you must get it right. First lay out all the boards in line with your plan to check they all fit together properly. Then screw them together to form a sturdy base on which to build your deck.
Step 5: Lay the deck
After installing the subframe, you can begin building the deck. The best way to do this is to start at the edge, checking as you go along for alignment and proper drainage. Once you are happy with the positioning you can use decking screws to secure the boards. These will be flush once screwed in properly giving you the perfect finish to your deck.
Step 6: Finish and seal
After installing the deck, it’s time to finish and deal with it. This usually means sanding it so it’s nice and smooth and then adding a layer of protection. You can choose from a variety of options for the layer of protection including varnish, wood stain, or even outdoor paint.
Step 7: Enjoy your new deck
Now you have installed your new garden deck, the only thing left to do is to grab a chair and a chilled drink and enjoy it.
