Debt is something that many people deal with, some deal with it better than us. It is easy for debt to become overwhelming and it can become extremely hard to deal with.

How Can You Get Help?
When you finally realise you need help, it can be tough to know where to turn and what steps to take. Some manage to take steps themselves – becoming stricter with themselves and trying to increase their income so they can increase their payoffs.
Other people seek help from different services such as Moneyplus Advice. There are different things you can do to help with your debt such as entering into an Individual Voluntary Arrangement (more commonly abbreviated to an IVA) – this can potentially write off a lot of your debt and makes your monthly payment affordable with interest and charges stopped.
Why Does Debt Become Overwhelming?
There are many reasons why debt can become overwhelming. A lot of people struggle with it because they have no idea what they truly owe because they don’t know how to calculate the interest and charges that they also have to pay. Others don’t have a budget so overspend in areas of their life without realising it and find it hard to get their spending under control.
There is a strong link between debt and poor mental health. Not only can mental health conditions lead to debt but debt itself can cause them which is why it is important to seek help when you realise you need it. Certain life events can also cause debt to spiral out of control such as the death of loved ones or the loss of a job where, in either situation, there will be a loss of income for some time.
There is still a stigma surrounding debt despite there being many reasons why you might have fallen into debt. In 2023, 15% of the adult population needed debt advice to help with their debts. It isn’t hard to imagine that there is potentially many more people out there in debt who haven’t yet been brave enough to seek advice.
Moneyplus Advice have recently started a wonderful campaign to help those in debt – looking at the ways that people fall into debt and the techniques they can use to help get themselves out of debt. I am sure you can agree this is a really worthwhile campaign and will be very helpful.
Debt is something many of us deal with it and we shouldn’t let the stigma surrounding the word stop us from seeking help. I hope this guide has helped you in some way.
