It’s time to buy a new wardrobe – but just what type of wardrobe should you choose? Wardrobes come in all shapes and sizes, so it’s important to do your research and find the right one. Below are some of the big things to consider when choosing a wardrobe.
What size?
Probably the most important factor is the size. The perfect wardrobe should be big enough to fit everything you need in it, while also slotting neatly into your home. Start by considering where you plan to put the wardrobe and then measure the space. You can then look for wardrobes within these dimensions. Some of the smallest wardrobes are built for kids, while the biggest options include full-wall wardrobes and walk-in wardrobes
Freestanding or fitted?
Fitted wardrobes are custom-built in order to fit a certain space in your home. They are ideal for oddly shaped rooms where there may be alcoves or sloped roofs. Because these wardrobes are attached to the wall and built specifically to fit a certain space, you cannot take them with you if you decide to move home – unlike a freestanding wardrobe. Freestanding wardrobes are also generally cheaper than fitted wardrobes.
Pre-assembled or flat-pack?
Flat-pack wardrobes are easier to transport in a regular vehicle and are generally easier to manoeuvre into a property where there may be tight corridors, narrow doorways or awkward stairways. With some pre-assembled wardrobes you may have no choice but to pay for delivery or hire removal services in order to move and transport the wardrobe. Some pre-assembled wardrobes may even be impossible to get into certain spaces without dismantling them. Of course, while flat-pack wardrobes can be cheaper and more space-efficient, you typically have to be the one to build them. Construction quality may also not be as high as with some pre-assembled wardrobes.
What type of contents?
Wardrobes are typically used to store clothes, but it’s important to consider what type of clothes they will be storing. If it’s mostly clothes that you want to hang up, it could be important to have a lot of hanging space. Alternatively, you may prefer a wardrobe with only a small hanging compartment and more shelves or drawers for folded clothes, shoes or accessories. Some wardrobes even have hooks for hats or shoe racks for footwear.
New or used?
Used wardrobes are a better option for those on a tight budget. They are often so cheap that you don’t have to take out finance (unless you’re buying an antique wardrobe). Of course, new wardrobes are likely to be better quality and may have customisable features when buying from certain stores. This is something to weigh up.
What material?
Wardrobes are typically made of wood, but they can be made from various different types of wood. Composite woods like MDF and plywood are generally cheaper, whereas solid wood is more expensive but more durable. Some people prefer wood with a matte or gloss paint finish, while others like the look of natural wood. Glass, metal and plastic are more alternative materials for those that want a wardrobe that stands out. Mirrored wardrobes are a popular option that can provide a dual purpose.
What type of doors?
Finally, consider the door mechanism. Hinged doors are the most popular option, however sliding doors and concertina doors are fun alternatives. Of course, you don’t have to have doors at all – having all your clothes on display could force you to keep your clothes tidy.
