If you’re like us and can’t stand doing remote work at home, you’re probably wondering where the best computer-friendly coffee shops are. Luckily, Edinburgh is home to a wide range of indie coffee shops that you can work in.
However, as you probably know, you need more than just your typical craft coffee house. You need stable Wi-Fi, comfortable seating, accessible plug sockets, and an atmosphere that is welcoming to remote workers. You don’t want to feel like you’re taking up too much space or spending too long at a table.
1. Black Medicine
2 Nicolson St, Edinburgh EH8 9DH
Black Medicine is popular with students thanks to its relaxed, laptop-friendly atmosphere. Students come here to socialize, study, and have a little fun. Sites like https://www.optibet.lv/casino offer security and variety. However, you don’t have to be a student to use Black Medicine’s facilities. There’s lots of space and both an upstairs and a downstairs. The staff is friendly and happy for you to spend however long you need (within reason).
2. LOWDOWN
40 George St, Edinburgh EH2 2LE
LOWDOWN is often ranked among the best laptop-friendly cafes in Edinburgh. If you’re looking for a comfortable space to work midweek, look no further than this New Town spot. Located in a basement terrace (hence the name), LOWDOWN is small, but a great place to get some focused work completed. The atmosphere is relatively hushed, which is great for those who can’t concentrate with loud music and conversations. It may not be the best option for spending long hours, but it is great for one-to-two-hour work sessions.
3. Artisan Roast
57 Broughton St, Edinburgh EH1 3RJ (and various other branches throughout Edinburgh)
Artisan Roast is one of the longest-standing indie coffee shops in Edinburgh. Since the dawn of remote work as we know it today, this cafe has provided laptop users with a suitable place to drink coffee and get work done. However, Artisan Roast isn’t totally work-focused, and you will have to deal with a significant amount of background noise. Nothing that your headphones can’t solve!
4. The Edinburgh Futures Institute
1 Lauriston Pl, Edinburgh EH3 9EF
This Edinburgh University building features a large cafe area that all members of the public can use – not just students and university staff. It features an open-plan setup, with plenty of tables to choose from. There’s also plenty of natural light and strong Wi-Fi, making it perfect for working. The cafe doesn’t only serve coffee – here, you can buy breakfasts and lunches, too.
5. Cairngorm Coffee
1 Melville Pl, Edinburgh EH3 7PR
If you need to collaborate on work with someone, head to Cairngorm Coffee. This coffee shop boasts large communal tables that are perfect for two or more people to sit and work together. There’s also specialty coffee, free Wi-Fi, and lots of plug sockets on offer. While lunchtime can get quite busy, mornings and later in the afternoon are more relaxed.
