We were recently asked to try out Besos de Oro’s latest product – Besos de Chocolaté – a brandy and horchata blend chocolate liqueur. As if that doesn’t sound tempting enough it’s completely allergen free. So free from gluten, dairy, lactose, nuts, soya, and suitable for vegans.

The timing of this review request couldn’t have been better as not only was I coming to the end of my Sober October challenge but also have recently given up dairy, so I hadn’t expected to be enjoying chocolate liqueur any time soon! Although part of me did wonder how good it would actually be. Could a dairy free liqueur be both creamy and chocolatey?
What is Besos de Oro?
Started in 2012 when inventor Peter Smith mixed brandy with a Spanish drink known as Horchata whilst living in Spain. Peter experimented with the ingredient quantities to refine the recipe and everyone who first tasted the chance combination agreed it was delicious. Before long, though after a few nightcaps, Besos de Oro was born.
What is Horchata?
It’s probably also worth covering this off for anyone wondering exactly what is horchata? Horchata, or orxata, is a Spanish nut milk drink that has it’s origins in the town of Alboraya, Valencia and is made with tiger nuts.
What Does Besos de Oro Chocolate Liqueur Taste Like?

As mentioned I was slightly sceptical of how good a Chocolate brandy liqueur that was free of pretty much everything was going to be. Thankfully those thoughts were put to bed after my first sip. This brandy chocolate liqueur is delicious and goes down very easily!
Before I tried it the obvious comparison would be to Baileys. Although this is really nothing like it. I find Baileys to be rather gloopy, whereas Besos de Chocolate is very smooth while still managing to be creamy enough. The taste is also quite strong for a drink that’s only 18% abv. So if, like me, you are a fan of brandy and chocolate then you are definitely going to enjoy it.
It’s also worth pointing out that this isn’t a second best substitute if you are dairy free or vegan. Personally I would choose to drink this over popular dairy containing alternatives even if I wasn’t dairy free.
With Christmas coming up this is definitely going to be on the after dinner drinks list (or maybe the before dinner drinks list!) and would also make a great gift for any brandy lovers.
Where Can I Buy It?
