Getting Mr E to head out for brunch is a pretty easy task, he loves a good full breakfast and a good cup of coffee. On this occasion we headed along the bypass to Après. They’ve not been open very long, but have done a fantastic job of making sure they tagged us in delicious looking food pictures on instagram. When we arrived we weren’t quite sure what to expect. We were greeted with a mountaineering shop but spotted the Après signs in the window up above.
I’m sure you can see from the pictures above that it looked fantastic and we are pleased to confirm it tasted even better! The poached eggs on sourdough toast usually come on their own but I asked for black pudding and they happily obliged. The black pudding was soft on the inside and had that slightly crispy texture on the outside. Definitely a thumbs up. The cooked breakfast was on par with some of our favourite places in town. The homemade sausages had a fantastic herby taste but careful not to overpower the pork. The breakfast comes with eggs how you like them so Mr E joined me in having poached eggs. Probably because I don’t normally make them at home. The back bacon was massive slices and when served with the grilled tomato and black pudding it really was a feast. The mushrooms were an additional side.
The staff here are great and it’s easy to see how family friendly they are. They happily explained the menu to us and left us to decide on what we wanted. There is an outdoor enclosed space so the kids can roam free and like the day we visited scoot about on their scooter. The family feel to the place might not appeal to everyone but to be honest we hardly noticed whilst sitting at our window seat gazing out at The Pentlands.
No visit would have been complete without taking away some cakes. I snapped up a lemon meringue tart for myself and salted caramel cruffins for Mr E and his dad. The cakes were equally as good as their breakfast. They’ve recently started doing Sunday roast dinners but be quick as they have a limited number available each Sunday and when they’re gone, well they’re gone.
